Working primarily by hand, Beetson employs a diverse range of painting and drawing techniques in her art. In her illustration practice, she sometimes employs digital refinement undertaken selectively during the finishing process.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhile she has previously divided her time between Australia, London and New York, Beetson is now based primarily on a rural property in South East Queensland, where she maintains a large studio adjacent to her home. Her earlier work critically engaged with contemporary politics, celebrity culture and the contradictions of popular media. Over the past five years, following the birth of her son, her practice has shifted toward an immersive exploration of the natural world, focussing on flowers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis thematic transition began with \u003ci\u003eIn Bloom\u003c\/i\u003e, a series of flower paintings developed during pregnancy, and continued with \u003ci\u003eFLOWERS ON YUGAMBEH COUNTRY\u003c\/i\u003e, a body of work responding to Australia’s The Voice referendum and acknowledging the traditional indigenous owners of the land she lives upon. Her most recent series examines native and culturally significant floral species from Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand and Japan.
