About the work
In her series The Interloper, Sarah explores the complexities of her identity as a dual national of Australia and Britain. Having being born in and growing up in Britain, Sarah moved to Australia as a young adult, and she reflects on the subtle tensions and harmonies that arise from navigating two distinct cultural landscapes. The artwork becomes a meditation on belonging, displacement, and the ways in which personal and national identities intertwine. By featuring predominantly native Australian flowers alongside a single British "interloper" - the apple blossom - Sarah symbolically references her own experience of existing between two worlds. The inclusion of this foreign flower within an otherwise Australian context underscores the gentle friction and beauty of cross-cultural identity, highlighting the duality that defines Sarah’s sense of self and creative perspective.
